But ...

Question of the day: What is the biggest word in the Bible?

Answer: "But!" It’s found plenty of times in the chapter I read this morning (Leviticus 26). I want to draw your attention to a few places. The chapter begins with 13 verses describing the blessed life of obedience to God. Then there is the first "but" at the beginning of verse 14.

"But" if you disobey God ... calamity! What follows is 25 verses that describe the pain and suffering of living outside the protecting love of God. Pain and suffering equal to 7 times our sins is promises repeatedly. Hopefully, we're past that in history.

Then in verse 40 there is another "but". This time what follows is God's promise to never forget His people; "but" it's conditional. Read this ... Leviticus 26:40a, 42 "But if they confess their iniquity and that of their fathers, in the treachery they committed against Me ... then I will remember My covenant with Jacob and also My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land."

Then God confirms His promises with one final "but". Leviticus 26:45 "But for their sake I will remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God. I am Adonai."

Today, I get the last word ... What a mighty God we serve!

Read Psalm 150. I yield the last word to God.
