"To defend a country, you need an army. But to defend an identity, you need a school. Judaism is the religion of the book, not the sword." - Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks (Radical Then, Radical Now p. 156) As a culture, Jewish people value education, especially Jewish education. What is Jewish education you ask? Well, it means different things to different people in different parts of the world and at different times. It involves Hebrew (today as a modern spoken language and always as Scripture and liturgy). In most Ashkenazi orthodox communities it includes Yiddish and Talmud. In many conservative and reform communities it involves understanding Jewish history, culture and a proper appreciation of the destiny of our people. You and your children deserve a good Jewish education. Remember, it's never too late to learn a little something.
