advent - This word means "the coming". We can talk about the advent of winter or the advent of technology, but the most frequent use is with a capital letter: the Advent of Messiah. There are typically four Sundays in Advent and an addition candle is lit in church each week in a frame (holding four in total) to mark the time. In that sense, it is very like the Jewish counting through the days of the Omer. Setting aside arguments over the time of year, the degree of pagan infiltration, or even the celebration of Yeshua's birth at all since it isn't commanded in Scripture, but trying to see how G-d might be using this time in the hearts and minds of His people, we have to rejoice that at this time of year, the minds of many Christians - through Advent courses and seasonal sermons - will be drawn to thinking about Yeshua's return. It is easy to be glib and say 'Yes' when asked if we believe that Yeshua will return; it is slightly harder to affirm that we expect Him to return soon and only a few will be comfortable if asked whether they are ready for Him to return now, that is, today or in the next few weeks! But why not? Perhaps we should be asking ourselves this question more often.
