Giving Respect & Honor to Persons of Advanced Age

While the commentators keep their comments strictly to the verse that tells us to stand up in the presence of a person with grey-hair, I think this principle covers a much wider spectrum of people.

Why is this Mitzvah #N8 needed? Regrettably, it is because, too frequently, persons of advanced age are not respected. I suggest that the reason for this is because older persons, over time, lose some of their more visible functions (mainly physical), while the ways in which they gain in value (knowledge, wisdom, and experience) are less visible and less tangible.

I consider what "older persons" mean both in the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Covenant writings, give reasons for why they should be respected and what an important role those with wisdom have in our communities.
