Patty and I will be spending Shabbat at Tikvat Israel Congregtion in Richmond, VA. This congregation and its building have a long history: Our community was founded 25 years ago and is a member of the Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations (UMJC) ... Our synagogue building, which seats 500 people in the main sanctuary, was constructed in 1914 as the home of Grace Baptist Church. It later became the home of Keneseth Beth Israel (an Orthodox synagogue) in the 1940s through the 1970s. Tikvat Israel Congregation, under the leadership of Rabbi Jamie Cowen (who now lives in Israel), purchased the old synagogue building in 1990 and we view its unique Jewish-Christian history as in many ways reflective of our identity as a synagogue that brings together Judaism and faith in Jesus. Tikvat Israel is a lively congregation with chavurah meetings, Shabbat morning services followed by oneg and regular oppurtunities to get involved in the community to serve and learn. We will be arriving tomorrow and spending some time with the current leader, Rabbbi David, before speaking at the Shabbat morning service. If you want to come and hear us, come along for the the 10am start and click here for address and contact details!
