The Call of Abraham

This, of course, leads to a question: Does Israel retain a special meaning under God's covenant promises? If so, what is that meaning? ...

No New Testament passage confutes the continuation of the Abrahamic Covenant, an unconditional and everlasting covenant. As Paul says, "The gifts and call of God are irrevocable"; Israel remains "beloved for the father's sake"(see Rom. 11:28-29). The slavation of individual Jews is not assured simply by their being part of Israel, but Israel, as a nation, still is part of this covenant, which promises to give and receive blessing, preservation, land, and purpose as a national instrument of God's purposes.

We need to emphasise that God's choice of Abraham - and Israel - was not for a narrow or limited purpose. Rather, His blessing for the whole world is the keynote. Israel might be chosen, but that choice is for service, to bring blessing to all.
