Proverbs 16:6a "By mercy and truth is iniquity atoned ..."
Note: Just a half of a verse? Oh, and there were many excellent choices in this chapter. I may come back and do a series on just this one chapter. There is so much here.
Let me ask you a question. Why would I choose this part of one verse about atonement, when Yeshua is our atonement? Because the Bible clearly associates Yeshua with the Hebrew terms for "Mercy" and "Truth."
"Mercy" is Chesed and "Truth" is Emet. Where do we find this? John 1:14 "And the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us. We looked upon His glory,
the glory of the one and only from the Father, full of grace and truth."
Of course the New Testament is not written in Hebrew (at least we don't have any surviving ancient Hebrew texts). We do, however; have "The Delitzsch Hebrew Gospels", (go ahead and Google it) which was written 150 years ago by Franz Delitzsch and his team of scholars (recently republished by FFOZ, I'm so glad). They knew Greek and Hebrew and did the most authoritative work to restore the Gospels to Hebrew. Sure enough, the last 2 Hebrew words in John chapter 1, verse 14 are Chesed V'Emet.
Let me close the loop here. Yeshua is the "grace and truth" that atones for our sins. This is prophesied in the Proverbs (chapter 16, verse 6a), and now we all know it. It makes the heart glad. Singing, "Rejoice, rejoice, Emanuel ..."
