Can we learn from sports?

Back in the day, the "Wide World of Sports" (ABC from 1961-1998) used to begin their weekly broadcast with a video montage and a voiceover saying, "The thrill of victory

... and the agony of defeat." I love sports because there is a clear difference between winning and losing.

I love it when someone snatches victory from the jaws of defeat. As that happens, many times the opposite is also happening. Someone else is snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Let me take a moment to try to turn this into something with real spiritual depth.

Our lives are being played out before the Lord. Despite what you hear about predestination, we still have a free will. God offers us choices and the choices are ours.

Predestination may be that God knows our choices before we make them. Our choices will lead to victory or defeat. Choose wisely or choose poorly. (WWYD)

One last ingredient (not to be forgotten) is patience. Longfellow wrote "A Psalm of Life" (I know, you thought I would quote the Bible). The last line is "Learn to labor and to wait." Learn to wait upon God (act in his timing), and the opportunity to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat is greatly enhanced.

"In Time" was the motto of the Houston family. Local connection: Sam Houston was from Maryville, TN where he taught school. He went to Texas and became a general and a

statesman. "In Time" doesn't tell the whole story. "In His Time"does.
