Disciple

Hebrew 'talmid' - someone who learns to be like another. We are learning to be like our master, Yeshua. G-d is conforming us to the image of His Son so that He might be the first-born among many brothers (and sisters) (Romans 8:29).

An apprenticeship to learn a trade can take seven years or more, but by the end, the work of the apprentice should be indistinguishable from the work of the master. That is what G-d desires from us: that our work, our fingerprint, should be indistinguishable from that of Yeshua. This doesn't mean, of course, that we lose our identity and just become a clone of Yeshua - we are still us - but that we take on His characteristics, His way of speaking, His gentle touch that won't snuff out a smouldering wick or break a bruised reed, but will instead bring healing and wholeness.

Yeshua told His disciples that "A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master" (Matthew 10:24); we will never be more than Him, but we are called to get as close to Him as we can: to think as He would, to see things as He sees them, to be gracious as He is.

Father G-d has His hand on us and "will complete the good work He has started" (Philippians 1:6), but we need to work with Him working out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12) and encouraging one another as the day draws near (Hebrews 10:25). Then we will hear His voice say, "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:21).
