Why a holiday to repent?

We are currently in the Hebrew month of Elul. The end of the last day of Elul is the beginning of the Hebrew month Tishre, this year on Wednesday, September 20th, at sundown. This marks the beginning of our fall holiday season, which last for 23 days and include (for us at Shomair Yisrael) about 16 worship services plus other celebrations.

It is appropriate to sound the Shofar (ram's horn) every day during the month of Elul. This serves as a reminder to pray the prayers of repentance. Which brings us to the question, "Why do we need a holiday for repentance we can repent any time?" God put it on His calendar every year because He knew we would need an annual season of community wide repentance.

We can repent anytime, anywhere, but God calls us to a season of repentance leading up to the Day of Atonement, also called Judgment Day. One last important note. We have to repent to God for sins against God and repent to the offended party for sins against people.
